What My Mom Doesn’t Know About Social Media

by Jenny L. Bruck DC

This past weekend a relative said something really funny. (Ok, so it was my mom. But she’s really sweet so don’t give her a hard time!) I had taken a super cute picture on my iPhone and mom said, “Honey, can you fax that to ebay for me?”...............yep, I was silent for quite a while. “What Mom?”

“You know, use your phone to put it up on ebay so my friends can see it,” she clarified. I learned that she meant Facebook. When she said “fax” she meant “text.” She had seen me texting over the weekend and she also knew that I had the capability to upload photos online. She was finally getting comfortable with words like fax and ebay but the words text and Facebook are quite new for her (particularly since she does neither herself.)

Isn’t it interesting how culture gets used to words that a decade ago no one used? Medical words have a similar history. Cholesterol, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, diabetes and autism are words that have over time become mainstream to the public. My recommendation for the next common household word is subluxation.

This is how a family could use the word subluxation:

Mom: “Billy, please stop jumping on the couch. I don’t want you to fall off and get subluxated.”

Dad: “Please empty some of these toys and books out of your backpack, Susie. Carrying this heavy weight will cause subluxation in your spine.”

Billy: “Dad subluxated his neck when he hit a tree skiing.”

Susie: “Mom, I think I have a fever. Would you please check me for subluxation so my body can heal?”

The definition of subluxation is spinal pressure on the nerve system. Basically, traumas, repetitive motions and even stress can cause the bones in the spine to shift and twist, creating pressure on the spinal cord and nerves exiting the spine. The nerves supply the power to the entire body: every muscle, tissue and organ. Even your immune function, digestion and breathing are under the direct control of your nerve system.

Chiropractors are specifically trained to detect and help your body correct subluxation. By realigning the spine, pressure is taken off your nerve system. The replenished nerve flow allows your body to function at a higher level. Chiropractic adjustments, in essence, bring more life flow to the body.

So make sure you skype me on craig’s list if you need a subluxation check-up!
